Arrowtown - Sawpit Gully
Share
Sawpit Gully is a picturesque 7-8km track that starts and finishes next to the Chinese Settlement in Arrowtown. The trail circles around German hill and on a clear day you will be rewarded with stunning views of Lake Hayes, Brow Peak and the Crown Mountain Range. The easy access makes Sawpit Gully popular for both local trail runners and visitors seeking to explore Queenstown's surrounding nature. There lies a variety of exciting terrain including river crossings and technical descents so having the right footwear with good grip is key.
Trail Description:
Sawpit Gully is a loop and can be completed both clockwise and anticlockwise. Most people choose the clockwise route, however, if you are running, anticlockwise you'll have a more gradual ascent.
There is a big carpark behind Ramshaw Lane where parking is plentiful and free. In this area there is a sign with a map showing the route which should be observed before starting.
Turning left out the carpark, there is a relatively flat track that follows the river for around 1.5km. When you reach the small footbridge, stick to the right track that begins the ascent. Here, you will encounter some steep, sandy climbs and small sections in the forest. There is also the option of adding the detour up German Hill - well worth it for the views of Lake Hayes and Cecil Peak. The track then starts descending and wet feet should be expected as there are multiple small river crossings. Continue down the valley until you turn right onto the Arrow Gorge Track. Here, you will pass clusters of colourful lupins and the old Arrowtown Pipeline. There are also openings in the tree line where you can spot 4x4 trucks splashing through the Macetown track. Stick to the path and you will find yourself back at the carpark shortly.
Sawpit Gully definitely holds some special memories for me, including a Christmas day run with a friend in the pouring rain and post work sunset runs with clear, golden skies.
